Have your say on aged care The Government has recently introduced its long awaited Aged Care Bill into the Parliament.
The introduction of this Bill has been a long time coming, and I know how important this reform is to communities across Indi. As a provider of aged care services, I know that you will have thoughts about this Bill and will want to understand how the new Aged Care Act would impact you.
That’s why I am scrutinising this Bill closely. As an Independent Member of Parliament, I interrogate each Bill on its merits and ask whether it will improve access to aged care services for people in North-East Victoria? Will it help providers who have been waiting so long for reform? You can read more about the Bill here.
I want to hear from the community. If you have a view on the legislation, please get in touch.

Working for a solution to regional childcare shortages “There simply isn’t anywhere that has capacity, so I can’t go back to work.” That’s what one mum shared with me this week at our Indi Playdates in Wodonga and Wangaratta, and unfortunately, it’s a story all too common in regional, rural and remote Australia. Maddy Butler from the national advocacy group The Parenthood joined me to hear from parents, grandparents, and carers about their experiences accessing early childhood education and care. We heard about the challenges of finding a childcare place close to home and the hundreds of kilometres some parents travel each week – sometimes each day – to access early learning and care. We heard from grandparents too, who are juggling their work to assist in the care of grandchildren. The testimonials of regional and rural families in Indi will shape The Parenthood’s upcoming report on the impacts of inaccessibility of childcare. If you have a story or struggle with childcare you would like to share with me and The Parenthood for their report please send me an email at helen.haines.mp@aph.gov.au.
Preparing for the 3G closure With Telstra closing the 3G network on August 31, now is the time to ensure you and those around you are ready. Here are some steps you can take: If you’re unsure about your device’s compatibility, you can text ‘3’ to 3498 for guidance from Telstra.Customers living rurally in financial stress, and the elderly are being contacted by Telstra as they may be eligible for a new free handset. You can also visit this website for more information. I encourage you to assist any vulnerable community members who may be affected by the 3G shutdown. I am listening to concerns in the community regarding the shutdown of 3G, including what it means for coverage and devices on farms. If you have any concerns, please reach out to my office.
